Baldíos / Loitering

The ephemeral is an existential condition for both the people of Baja California as well as their things. Recent trends in contemporary art and philosophy have suggested that objects are living beings too. In this way both honouring the things of beauty, which captures our attention, but as well offering rehabilitation to the humble, discarded things that we see everywhere in Baja’s cities. This philosophical trick is partly a first-world strategy, not uninteresting, to reposition some art and some artists, who might find it difficult explain why their art should otherwise merit our attention.
The objects on display here are not living. They are a rearrangement and reinvigoration of things, which once had a function in the lives of people. The closest we can get to think objects as living beings is to elevate them by projecting our passion onto them and to reorganise them in such spatial constellations.
The spatial dimension is important as a generator and condition of objects. The trash has its partner and equivalent in the spaces of the baldios, which are the theatres that see the stories of discarded objects performed. Artists are of course attracted to this drama, which surrounds us everywhere in the cities of Baja. The artistic manner of engaging with these humble things is to enter their spaces to loiter, watch and touch. In this manner they engage in risky behaviour to become criminals because we all associate loitering with trespassing. The baldios on their part don’t mind the presence of the artists, like an old actor they like becoming the focus of attention once more.

Lo efímero es una condición existencial tanto para la gente de Baja California como para sus cosas. Las tendencias recientes en el arte contemporáneo y la filosofía han sugerido que los objetos también son seres vivos. De esta manera, honramos las cosas bellas, que captan nuestra atención, pero también ofrecen rehabilitación a las cosas humildes y descartadas que vemos en todas partes en las ciudades de Baja California. Este truco filosófico es, en parte, una estrategia del primer mundo para reposicionar obras de arte y algunos artistas, a quienes les podría resultar difícil explicar por qué su arte de otra manera merecería nuestra atención.
Los objetos que se muestran aquí no están vivos. Son una reorganización y revitalización de las cosas, que alguna vez tuvieron una función en la vida de las personas. Lo más cerca que podemos llegar a pensar en los objetos como seres vivos es elevarlos proyectando nuestra pasión sobre ellos y reorganizarlos en tales constelaciones espaciales. En esta manera mejoramos nuestra conciencia de las ciudades, sociedades y vidas.
La dimensión espacial es importante como generador y condición de los objetos. Los escombros tienen su equivalente en los espacios de los baldíos, que son los teatros donde vemos las historias de los objetos desechados. Por supuesto, los artistas se sienten atraídos por este drama que nos rodea en todas partes en las ciudades de Baja California. La manera artística de interactuar con estas cosas humildes es entrar en sus espacios para merodear, mirar y tocar. De esta manera, se involucran en comportamientos riesgosos para convertirse en delincuentes porque todos asociamos “loitering” con la intrusión. Los baldíos por su parte aprecian la presencia de los artistas, como un viejo actor al que les gusta volver a ser el centro de atención.
